As part of the European Research Council-funded project on ‘Paramilitary Violence in Europe after the Great War (1917-1923)’, University College Dublin (UCD) is offering three four-year Post-Doctoral Fellowships for candidates wishing to undertake research on the history of paramilitary violence after the Great War from an international comparative or transnational perspective. Successful applicants will be working
with Dr Robert Gerwarth as recipient of the ERC grant. Applications from scholars working on the demobilisation of colonial troops, the Russian Civil War, or the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire are particularly encouraged to apply, but all other applications are also welcome. Candidates are expected to complete a monograph during the tenure of the fellowship and to contribute to the organization of the overall project.

Principal responsibilities include:

- Research and organisational contribution to the overall project
- Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the direction of the Principal Investigator
- Engage in the dissemination of the research in which you are engaged as directed by the Principal Investigator
- Engage in wider research and scholarly activities of your research group, School and Institute
- Mentor and assist as appropriate and as directed, the research graduate students in your group, School and Institute
Carry out administrative work associated with your programme of research

Applicants are expected to have successfully completed a PhD degree in a field relevant to the project by 1 September 2009 and to show promise of high calibre publications

The dealine for completed applications, including a covering letter, a 500 words project proposal and a CV, is 23 July 2009. Candidates should also provide the names and contact details of two academic referees who will be contacted if the candidate is short-listed. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in Dublin in August 2009.
